The Gateway Community Greenery Pollinator Habitat is well underway! Congratulations to Axel Ivers, who won the naming contest for this pollinator habitat on the corner of John R and Trowbridge.
Did you know that Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park are home to over 300 different species of birds!? As such, these areas are globally recognized as important habitats for birds and other pollinators. So we are partnering with the neighborhood to create a pollinator habitat, which will provide benefits for pollinators AND people, such as:
The vision
- Cleaning up underused city green spaces
- Beautifying neighborhoods with native flowers and grasses
- Creating opportunities for outdoor activities and community science programs
- Providing birds with a safe place to rest, eat, and nest along migration routes
- Restoring important, yet disappearing habitats such as meadow and grassland
- Providing a welcoming community greenspace
- Offering proven physical and mental health benefits
We have been gathering community input regarding park design to ensure that the end result matches the community’s vision.
We have partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to plant native wildflowers and grasses and eliminate invasive species.
Trees and fencing have been installed. More fundraising, signs, benches, and butterfly/bird houses are on the way.
We plan to utilize this space as a mini community to provide educational opportunities throughout the different seasons.
