We have all heard of the Ripple Effect: a spreading progression in which a single event or action creates an expanding series of consequences. For example, Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, sparked the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott. This single act of courage energized the American Civil Rights Movement, which ultimately led to the end of legal segregation on public transportation and inspired global movements for equality. How about Jonas Salk and the Polio Vaccine? When asked who owned the patent to his life-saving polio vaccine, Salk famously replied, “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?” By refusing to patent it, Dr. Salk enabled immediate, low-cost global mass production, nearly eradicating polio worldwide and saving millions of children from paralysis or death.
What about you? This weekend, we kick off the Catholic Services Appeal here at the Cathedral. Every gift to the CSA creates ripples of grace throughout southeast Michigan. While we naturally think first about our own parish, we are also members of a much larger Catholic family. Together, we help ensure that ministries serving thousands of people continue to flourish.
Your generosity supports future priests studying at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, provides campus ministry for college students searching for Christ, assists Catholic schools, strengthens programs for young adults, and funds dozens of ministries that care for people spiritually, emotionally, and materially. Many of the people touched by these ministries will never know your name, but they will experience the love of Christ because someone chose to give.
There is also a practical benefit for our own Cathedral parish. Once we reach our assigned CSA assigned target ($23,681), every dollar given beyond that goal is returned to us to support our own ministries and future projects. On the other hand, if we do not reach our goal, the parish must make up the difference from our operating funds. Simply put, every gift helps twice—first across the Archdiocese and then right here at home.
St. Paul reminds us that the Church is one Body with many members (1 Corinthians 12). No one person can do everything, but together we can accomplish remarkable things. The CSA allows every parish to share in the mission of bringing hope, forming disciples, educating future leaders, and caring for those in need.
