Family of Parishes Helping Out Family

July 31, 2021 by Fr. J.J. Mech

In Mark’s Gospel, Our Lord says to “go out to all the world and tell the good news”.  In doing this, we inevitably expand our Catholic family. With Family of Parishes beginning at the start of July, we have been meeting new folks including the other priests from our sister parishes here in Detroit.  We are expanding our Catholic Family.

I want to share with you about a group of women who have been expanding our family for quite some time.  The Religious Sisters of the Home Visitors of Mary (HVM), who live on our Cathedral campus, twenty years ago expanded their religious congregation to Abuja, Nigeria, Africa’s most populated country.  In these last two decades, the Faith has truly taken root in Abuja.  Today in that nation, there are thirty HVM Sisters serving in three dioceses, running three schools, two daycares, and a vocational training center. They also assist with religious education and pastoral care in several parishes.

Wow, they are listening to Jesus’ command above!  They need our help to educate the sisters there, fund their ministry, and in particular purchase a van.  Our Knights of Columbus Council here at the Cathedral and the HVM Fundraising committee are throwing a Barbeque here at the Cathedral on August 22, from Noon to 3pm in order to “Keep the Mission Rolling!”

We would love your help.  You could volunteer to assist at the BBQ, and/or you can buy a $15 ticket, which includes ribs, chicken, hot dogs, drinks, and fellowship.  The Sisters are even providing an opportunity to buy books and art at the BBQ.  You may not be able to travel to Nigeria to Unleash the Gospel, but you sure can assist those who can.  In doing so, you can also Unleash the Gospel here while you eat.  Invite a friend, bring someone from your own family and expand the Family of believers here in Detroit.  Our K of C members will be selling tickets beginning this weekend.  If you want to assist in some other way, just let them know by calling the house at 313-869-2160. Those ladies need our help, let’s go out and share the Good News!

God Bless,
Fr. J.J.
