Memorial Mass & Galero Raising

August 18, 2018 | 5:00 pm

In the past, when creating a cardinal, the pope traditionally placed a scarlet galero on the new cardinal’s head.  This gave rise to the phrase “receiving the red hat.”  After he dies, his galero is suspended from the ceiling of the cathedral he served, alongside those of his predecessors. It hangs there until it is reduced to dust, symbolizing how all earthly glory is passing.

All are welcome to attend a very special Memorial Mass and Galero Raising at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in honor of our former shepherd Cardinal Edmund Szoka. This Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Vigneron on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 5 PM to offer prayers for Cardinal Szoka and honor his contributions to our Lord and the Church.
