All Saints’ Day Choral Mass
November 1, 2015 | 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The Archdiocesan Chorus leads hymns, chants and choral music during a special Mass for All Saints’ Day. The ordinary is Josef Rheinberger’s Mass for double choir in E flat ‘Cantus Missae’ Op 109, with motets by Stanford and Lassus. The Mass will conclude with a Te Deum. Fr. Dave Bechill will be the celebrant, and Fr. Duane Novelly the homilist.
This Mass will include a free will offering.
Apart from the organ sonatas, Rheinberger’s most famous work is the Mass for double choir in E flat, Op 109, written in 1878 and dedicated to Pope Leo XIII, who rewarded him for it with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Saint Gregory.
Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924): Beati quorum via is in six parts, with divided sopranos and basses, and is meditative in character. Effective use is made of contrasting the three upper and three lower voices, and the piece is rightly regarded as one of Stanford’s most exquisite unaccompanied compositions.
The Cathedral is located at 9844 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202. Doors open at 3:15 pm. Free, secure parking is adjacent to the Cathedral. To receive updates or more information, please write sacredmusic@aod.org or call 313-237-5782 or visit detcathedral.org.
