Apostolic Center of Arts and Culture

June 1, 2020 by Staff

Archbishop Vigneron has commissioned our rector, Father J.J. Mech, to turn Detroit’s Cathedral into an Apostolic Center of Arts and Culture.  This includes installation of an Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, massive renovations of the surrounding properties to invite the neighborhood into our embrace, celebration of the inspired work of local and international artists, and a special relic project.

It’s true: we steward a large collection of artifacts dating back to the earliest apostles and saints.  Each relic has been examined and authenticated by experts at the Vatican. Such relics provide hope, comfort, and even healing to those who pray in their presence.  They offer the chance to personally experience the miracles of faith. A museum-quality permanent display will ensure that these precious artifacts are available to all the faithful who seek a spiritual awakening or renewal, physical or emotional healing, and/or a deeper personal connection with God.

As a central feature of the relic exhibit, the Cathedral will also proffer fourteen stunning, larger-than-life statues: the 12 apostles and 2 angels. Each statue will be restored and installed in the Cathedral, accompanied by an actual relic of the respective Apostle, providing a remarkable opportunity for the faithful to be able to see, venerate, and spend time in a special way with these saints.

To empower this vision of the Archdiocesan Cathedral Council, we have opened an “Art for God’s Sake” 501c3 dedicated to raising the funds to ensure that we are able to fulfill the mission of the ACC without infringing on the limited resources of the Cathedral parish. If you feel called to help with bringing this vision – and others – to life for the people of Detroit and all who visit here, please donate to Art for God’s Sake by using the form below:
